I am back with a 3D model for my son’s science project – Life of People on Cold Mountain Regions. When we talk about cold mountain regions, the first thing that came to my mind was Ladakh.
Lets think of the lifestyle later. First we need to make the cold mountain region. I have followed the same procedure as one of my earlier models. You can refer to 3D model of Water Cycle for the basic structure.
Using the same method I have made this mountain. I will just give a brief explanation of this.
I have used thermocol and mount board for the base and the walls. Stuck them together and made the structure. Then crushed newspaper and placed it as per the requirement of mountains. Then mixed white cement and water to make a loose paste. Dip gauze bandage in this white cement mixture and place them on the newspaper so as to form the mountains. Allow this to dry completely. You can use POP or white cement. White cement dries faster than POP. If you use POP you will have to paint the mountains white later. The white cement gave a natural white colour and i did not paint them. Saved me lot of time.
Once the basic structure is done, now we have to think of the lifestyle of people here. The shelter, clothes, food, transport all comes in line now. People in cold mountain regions stay in houses with sloping roofs so that the snow falls down. So we need to make a few such houses.
Here is a picture showing some such houses. One of the main source of income in cold mountain regions is the hotels as these places are tourist spots. So i have made a bigger building showing the hotel. I have used thermocol for the houses and hotel as well. Coloured the thermocol once it was dry. Then stuck them on different places as per my requirement. To show the small trees, I have used an old Christmas tree. Cut the branches and pierced it into the thermocol below.
Another source of income here is the woolen wear they make. People rear sheep and make woolen wear from the fur. So i decided to show a shop selling woolen wear. I made a shop as seen in the picture using thermocol. I had many old woolen sock of my little baby. So i cut them and showed some woolen clothes. I took a printout of a lady and stuck it inside the shop. Hmm quite satisfied with the work so far. My son anyway was very happy. So were his group mates.
To show snow on the houses, I stuck some cotton. As the background i stuck the printout of sky on the wall. Also put some cotton from an old soft toy on the trees. Some soft toys are filled with nylon wool. This is thinner than cotton and gives a more natural look for snow.
To show a pond or water body, I cut out some thermocol and stuck blue glass paper. Then filled up the whole flat surface with cotton to show snow. Placed all the houses and shops in place.
Now turn for the transportation and people. People here use animals like horses and yak to travel on mountains. They also use bikes or cycles and jeeps. So i took pictures of all these and stuck them on thermocol. Then stuck them on the floor. I had some animals in the toys cupboard. So used them too. I made a road and painted it grey. Stuck some sheep to show sheep rearing also. Now to show the clothing of people here. People normally wear woolen clothes and clothes to keep them warm from the cold weather. So I took printouts and stuck them on thermocol and stuck them on the base. These are not 3D. But decided to keep it simple.
The children helped me with all the cutting of pictures and laying the cotton and all such work.
