Basket Weave Stitch

Basket weave stitch is a variation of the half cross stitch (/ tent stitch). This beginners needlepoint stitch can be used as a border or filling stitch.

I am using 2 colors of threads in this demo. But you can use just one if you want.

Start with a row of half cross stitches.

Note how we are skipping one square.

Continue to stitch the next row. Again note how we are skipping a line between two rows.

The diagonal stitches in the opposite direction will be stitched between two rows like shown below.

Now lets see how to turn corners. This is pretty straight forward in this stitch. Like I mentioned above, this is ideal for beginners.

Finished look of Basket weave. Kids can make DIY photo frames as gifts with this stitch. You can cut the middle portion and add photos or if you are a beginner and not comfortable cutting fabric, simply glue a picture in the middle. This will make a perfect 4th of July gift don’t you think?
