An absurdly funny story Cock-a-Doodle-Moo! will definitely appeal to preschoolers with a sense of humor. The story is very simple and the text is perfect to get kids playing with sounds.

Dawn breaks over the farm and all the animals are fast asleep. The rooster gets ready to wake everyone but unfortunately all he can do is whisper a Cock-a-Doodle-Doo! His own family doesn’t wake up and so he goes on to wake the other animals one by one. Unfortunately none of them can hear his whisper. The pigs, the cows, the ducks, and even the farmer with his pet cat and dog stay fast asleep.

The rooster decides to get some help. He wakes one of the cows who sees rooster’s difficulty. Whoever heard of a whispering rooster? The cow tries to crow loudly but he just cannot say Cock-a-Doodle-Doo. After several hilarious attempts the cow and rooster settle for Cock-a-Doodle-Moo! The other animals wake up and are amused at the cow’s ‘crowing’.

The book ends with a twist—when the rooster gets well, he and the cow continue to crow Cock-a-Doodle-Moo to wake the animals.

The preschool age nephews were entertained by the bright, funny illustrations, and the combination of snoring with animals sounds (z-z-zoink, z-z-zquack). We played around quite a bit with different animals sounds. A great book for working on phonemic awareness.
