Book Review: Monkey and Me

Author & Illustrator: Emily Gravett

Age Group: 2-5 Years

ISBN-13: 978-0-230-01583-8

A personal favorite, this book captures the exploits of a little girl and her monkey (stuffed animal, of course!) as they go to see various animals. It has very simple repetitive text, “Monkey and me,
Monkey and me,
Monkey and me,
We went to see… ”

which make it easy for even young children to participate in an interactive read aloud.

The illustrations catch the reader’s attention-the girl and monkey are shown moving like the animals. The little girl waddles, jumps, hands upside down…as she drags her monkey from one group of animals to another. Children will enjoy being able to predict which animal comes next. It can also be a good movement activity as children imitate the animal movements just like the little girl in the book.
