Rover is dry and warm in his cozy doghouse while it pours outside.
One by one other animals amble over to the doghouse and make room for themselves—until a strong smell wafts over and they realize there is another guest sheltering in the doghouse.
Who can it be? When they see that a skunk has been sheltering from the rain as well they scramble to get away from the smell. Luckily for Rover the rain stops and the skunk also leaves the doghouse. Rover goes back inside to chew his bone in peace.
The rhyming and predictable text made Move Over, Rover! a hit with the kids. We did some sequencing of the animals as they seek shelter in the doghouse. A good choice for a read aloud, the kids were surprised that they missed the skunk. They went back to look at the illustrations again to see if they had missed any other detail.
This book was one of the Theodore Geisel Honor books for the year 2007.
