Book Review: When The Goblins Came Knocking

I used to think that all children loved Halloween until my daughter turned three. She found it quite overwhelming and a bit frightening too. Like every other mother out there I ran to the store to buy her a fancy costume that she tossed aside with an outright “No!” I learned to temper my enthusiasm and go by what she wants for a costume and room decorations. Thankfully she enjoys the ride to the pumpkin patch with her friends.

Imagine my surprise when I browsed through “ When The Goblins Came Knocking ”. It is such a perfect book for kids who are a bit tentative about all the dressing up and going trick or treating with other kids in costume.

A little boy recollects how scared he was last Halloween when pumpkins, ghosts and goblins came trick or treating to his house.

Book Review: When The Goblins Came KnockingThis year, it is a different story altogether. The little boy is older and bigger, and he happily announces that he is the scariest of them all.

The rhyming verse, with so many vocabulary words for each Halloween character, is a big hit with my daughter. The illustrations capture the boy’s expressions of fear and uncertainty. It was less scary for my daughter because she saw that the trick or treaters were children dressed in costumes. The book has started a conversation about what she would like to be for this Halloween. She may not be the scariest one of them all, but she thinks she is ready to try on an actual costume.
