This Cabbage stir fry (Muttaikose Parupu Kootu) is an easy to make side dish for sambar and rice. Cabbage is high in fiber and helps with weight loss.

Cabbage Stir Fry – Muttaikose Parupu Kootu

Ingredients

Shredded cabbage

Onions – Finely chopped

Mustard seeds – 1 teaspoon

Urad dal / black gram dal – 1 teaspoon

Channa dal / Bengal gram- 2 teaspoons.

Salt

Turmeric powder – 1 pinch

Green chillies – split length wise ( 1 or 2)

Method

Wash and soak Channa dal in warm water.

Finely chop cabbage and wash it in water

Heat oil and add mustard seeds. Once it stops spluttering, add cumin seeds followed by urad dal, chillies and curry leaves.

Add chopped onions and stir fry till it is cooked.

Add soaked channa dal with a little water and cook it covered for a few minutes till the dal is soft. Don’t over cook it. Add very little water or the dish will become soggy as cabbage will give out water while it is getting cooked.

The water has evaporated and dal is cooked well now.

Add salt and a pinch of turmeric followed cabbage. Stir fry till it is done. You can add shredded coconut. (optional)
