This is the ninth tutorial in this series of Canadian smocking tutorials. Today we will learn to stitch the heart design. A smocked cushion with hearts will make a romantic Valentine’s day gift.

Here is the pattern / graph for the Canadian smocking hearts design.
Fabric taped to the floor and the pattern has been drawn on the back side of the fabric.
Smocking for this pattern is done by tying together the two ends of the diagonal lines.
Come back to A, pull tight and make a knot. This will form a diagonal fold in the fabric.
Go to the next diagonal line and repeat.

Length and width of fabric needed for hearts pattern
I used a grid with 1 inch by 1 inch squares. If you are going to use the same grid, you will require 1.5 times more fabric.
Standard cushion size is 16 inches by 16 inches. You will need a minimum of 24 inches.
Allow 5 inches on all 4 sides just in case.
