This is an eco-friendly baby rattle / woven coconut tree frond box. Sometimes few dried beans are added into the box while weaving. They will make noise when the rattle is shaken.
To make this, we have to repeat 2 simple steps again and again.
Take two strips of paper or coconut / palm tree fronds like this.
Pull all the 4 ends gently to tighten. We have now formed the first side of the box. Each cube will have 6 sides.
Like mentioned above, we will be repeating 2 steps again and again.
Bring the left most strip to the right side by passing under the second strip from the left. We now have 3 strips on the right and 1 on the left.
Now bring the right most strip to the left side. Note how it is woven by passing it over and then under.
Next repeat step 1 by bringing left most to the right.
Keep repeating the above mentioned steps. As you continue weaving, it will start curling on itself and you will see the box shape coming together.
Tuck in the excess length as this will provide additional strength to the box. As shown below, follow the pattern of the box when tucking in the excess.
Don’t worry this is simple but might take a couple of attempts. In the picture below, you can see the result of my first attempt(right side). It has been many many years since I touched a coconut leaf. I was trying to recollect how to weave this and ended up with this odd looking shape.
The excess length has been tucked in.
Great improvement after that first attempt I should say hahaha
Rattle is ready.
