Weaving is a lot of fun and there are a lot of ways of doing it. This is the simplest weaving technique.
Weaving is a great way to improve fine motor skills. It strengthens the finger muscles, improves dexterity and develops their pincer grasp that is necessary for writing skills.
Strips of felt (if possible in 2 different colors)
Sheet of felt or any fabric
Machine sew / hand sew or glue the strips of fabric as shown below. I used blanket stitch.
Repeat the same for the other set of felt strips so that the green strips are at right angles to the orange strips.
Weaving craft is ready for hours of finger exercise.
Here is the woven look 🙂
Wrap it and pack it in a ziploc bag and you have a busy bag that is ready to be played on the go. This has no detachable parts so it is perfect for the little ones during a road trip. Hey! anything to reduce the frequency of “Are we there yet?” queries. 😀

My little one loves patterns so she enjoyed trying to get alternating colors. Weaving also teaches patience and kids will learn that there is a process to complete this project. They have to weave row after row and column after column in a systematic way or there will be errors if they skip to the last strip 🙂 . My little one did try to skip to the last strip and then realized, it was actually faster and easier to do this patiently.
Felt fabric is not mandatory for this finger exercise. Even strips of newspaper can be used for this project. I made it with felt so it will last longer. When she was little, we used baby ribbons and cake cooling rack for weaving.
There is also a loom weaving kit available @ walmart and Michael’s. Kids can make pot holders using the loom and elastic loops that come with the kit.

Now that she is older, she figured out pretty soon that she has to lift the 1st, 3rd and 5th orange strips and lay down a green strip.
Then she has to bring them back and lay them flat and then lift the 2nd and 4th strip and lay down the next green strip.
Well she is now ready for some lattice crust apple pie. My little baby chef loves to cook and I love apple pie. 🙂 I swear I did not make this craft because I was craving some apple pie 🙂
