French knot stitch is easy, quick and very pretty. It can be used in a variety of ways in an embroidery pattern. They are usually scattered in a floral spray or added as the center of flowers. Seven french knots can used to stitch this simple flower motif.
Bring the needle up and hold the thread with your left hand. Hold the needle with your right hand and place it in front of the thread like shown below. Keep the tension on the working thread steady at all times. This is the only tip for getting proper french knots.
Wrap the thread around the needle like shown below. Some wrap it 2 times and some wrap 3 times.
With the thread wrapped around the needle, go down very close to spot where you came up.
Before pushing the needle all the way in, gently tug the working thread so that the wraps sit on the fabric. Compare with the picture above.
Keep your finger to hold down the working thread while the needle is being pulled. Red arrow points to the spot where the finger has to be placed. This will hold the knot in place.
