In this weaving tutorial, I am going to show how you can weave a basket handle using plastic wire. This handle is cylindrical and made with 4 wires that are braided just like we braid hair.
I have shown the method twice so if the first part is not helpful, continue to read and it will get easier.
I am using 4 different colors so it will be easy to follow this tutorial.
The method has 2 steps that we will repeat till we reach the desired length.
4th wire goes behind 3rd and 2nd and comes around and above 2nd.
In this case, green is the 4th wire and it goes behind yellow and pink and comes over pink. Now the green wire becomes the 3rd wire.
At the end of step 1, the 4th wire becomes the 3rd wire.
In step 2, the 1st wire will go behind 2nd and 3rd and passes over the 3rd.
In this case, the 1st wire is white and it goes behind the 2nd wire (pink) and 3rd wire (green) and comes above green.
So at the end of step 2, the 1st wire will become the 2nd wire.
In the picture below, we will repeat step 1 again – 4th wire (yellow) will become 3rd.
In the next picture, we will repeat step 2. So the 1st wire (pink) will become the 2nd wire now.
Continue and your braid will look like this.
If this is your first attempt, don’t be discouraged if your braid looks like the picture below. Happened for all of us. After a few attempts, you will know the amount of tension that is required.
Like I promised above, I am going to show this one more time.
Step 1: 4th wire will wrap behind 3rd and 2nd and come above the 2nd.
If you stop the handle in the middle and forget which step comes next, look at the top most wire (pink in this case). See the direction in which it travels (white arrow points to left bottom corner). In the next step, the topmost wire will intersect the pink wire and travel towards right bottom corner.
Yellow crossed over the pink to point to bottom right corner.
So lets proceed to step 2.
Step 2: 1st wire (green) will pass behind 2nd (pink) and 3rd (yellow) wires and come over the 3rd.
Repeat step 1 again.
Repeat step 2 again.
4 strand circle braid is ready. Pretty isn’t it?
I started with 4 strands that measured 1 meters each. The woven cord was about 66cms long (not including 3 inches on both sides).
Let us see 3 more variations of this.
In this, I am using 2 colors. I am laying them down so that the colors alternate each other.
The handle will look like this.
Looks like diagonal candy stripes doesn’t it?
Looks like my son thought so too. Little rascal decided that enough is enough and mommy should not waste time doing something other than giving him a belly rub.
He totally lost interest after a few minutes but a paw was still placed on the cord.
That is mine mommy. End of story.
So let us start variation 2. In this, 2 white wires are placed on the left and 2 pink wires are placed on the right.
The woven handle will look like this.
There is another variation where a single color is used. Tutorial for the flower vase can be seen here. As you can see, in this flower vase handle, we use 8 strands of wire. 4 of them will serve as the middle core and the other 4 are used to braid around the core. So this handle will be thicker and sturdier.
One method, many different looks. Post your comments and questions below.
