Health Benefits Of Nungu (நுங்கு) – Nungu is a fleshy juicy fruit found on palm trees. This, I believe, is a God given gift to those living in arid hot climate to keep us cool and hydrated. I have always wondered at the graceful wisdom of God when he created cactus in desert. These ice apples / tadgolas are one more example of this.
The fruits are translucent and have a gel like in appearance.
Not just the fruits, the fiber rich palm sprouts are a very healthy after school snack for little children.
Here is the recipe as well as a lot of information about these trees.
During school summer vacations, we used to visit our grand parent’s place (Tirunelveli and Tuticorin area) where we could see an abundance of these trees. This tree is one of those special trees where you can use all parts of it.
Reduce body heat
Anyone who has visited Tuticorin / Tirunelveli during summer will know how the body temperature can rise because of the dry hot weather there. This can cause a whole lot of health issues like hair loss, dry skin, prickly heat, dehydration and kidney failure. Excess body heat can also affect eye sight. I remember my grandma reminding me to oil my hair often. 😀
Nungu can replace not just the water but also the nutrients lost because of excess perspiration. Just like tender coconut water, this is effective in driving away thirst and fatigue / heat exhaustion.
Nungu is also believed to heal ulcers and keep acidity at bay. It is consumed by those who are suffering from constipation.
Because of its hydrating qualities, this fruit can nourish and improve skin texture. A piece of the fruit can be mashed and mixed with your regular face pack. But make sure to use it right after it is picked from the tree. As you already know, toddy (raw alcohol) is made from the sap of this tree. This fruit can also ferment easily and become acidic. We don’t want to apply that to our skin as it might burn the skin.
