This is a cute little project that I tried with plastic wire. This woven hat was made with plastic wire that is traditionally used to weave baskets in India. In this tutorial with step by step images, you can learn how to weave a hat.
Cut 15 wire pieces. Each is 2 meters long.
Now we will start adding the cut pieces to the running wire. Allow 1 meter on the left, fold a cut piece and make box knot / square knot. Tutorial for box knot / square knot is here.
This first line will be the middle line.
Repeat this process 14 more times. Allow 1 meter on the right side also and cut the running wire.
Important: The first line has to be the middle line. Add 7 lines above it and 7 lines below it.
We now have a woven square that is 15 knots tall and 15 knots wide. Measure and see if this fits the head.
Next step is to add the running wire and turn corners like we did in this basket.
Allow 3 inches and start making knots. When going around the corner, you will see a triangle forming.
Each corner should have a triangle. This means you have turned the corner correctly.
Continue adding more rows going around the square. Do this for more rows till you get the desired depth.
I stopped with 3 rows because this hat is for winnie the pooh stuffed toy. For human head, more rows will be required.
I also added a row of pink. Pretty isn’t it? 😉
Now we are ready to add the rim of the hat. The rim needs more wires. We will be adding 1 meter long wires at regular intervals. The wire will be folded into half and added between the existing knots.
Yellow arrow points to newly added wire.
Fold the wire into half and insert it into two knots like shown below.
Pull all the way through and it is now secured.
We now have 4 wires coming out of 2 knots.
And when we make knots with the running wire, we will be making 4 knots instead of 2. Continue making rows of knots with the running wire.
Note the increase.
I skipped 3 knots and added additional wires. Red circle shows the areas where additional wires were added.
To get a wavier rim, add more wires (You can skip 2 and add additional wires).
After 2 rows.
Add rows till brim reaches desired length.
After 6 rows, I finished with a row of knots with pink wire to give it a pretty edge.
Tuck in the excess wire.
Pretty and stylish woven hat ready. How is it? Leave your comments below.
This is a hat woven with coconut leaves. Partly seen on the right is a crown made with coconut leaves. Both of them were not made by me. I saw them in Hawaii and had to add this picture in this tutorial 🙂
