How to clean fish to remove fish odor

My mom washes all non vegetarian items in rice water to remove their smell.

Turmeric is an antiseptic and it is commonly used to give a final rinse for non vegetarian items. Turmeric cuts out the fish odor and also delays the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

Wash and cut fish pieces and then sprinkle some turmeric on it.

Rub the turmeric to cover the entire surface and let it sit for 5 minutes.

Then wash away the turmeric with water. The fish is ready to be marinated.

Removing fish odor from hands

To get rid of the smell of fish, wash your hands with rice water (water used to wash rice). You can also rub lemons that have been juiced after handling fish or any strongly flavored foods followed by washing with soap.

Recipe for spicy masala fish marinade

Usually fish is marinated in chilly powder, salt and turmeric. Adding ginger and garlic gives the fish fry a nice spicy punch and makes it a lot tastier and healthier too.

Important tip: Grate ginger and garlic rather than grinding them into a paste. If you have been adding ginger garlic paste to fish fry, try grating and you will see a big difference in the taste.

The grated ginger and garlic give the fish piece a nice crumbly, crispy, crunchy and appetizing seared layer on the fish.

The grated ginger can also be squeezed to extract juice. This juice can also be used to marinate.

Make masala for marinating fish by mixing shredded ginger, shredded  garlic, chilli powder, salt and turmeric. The moisture from ginger and garlic is enough to make this into a paste. Sprinkle very little water if necessary.

Squeeze a few drops of lemon juice to the marinade. This is optional.

Handy tip for moms trying to include protein in their kid’s diet

Immediately after bringing fish home from the shop, I wash it like shown above and add the masala and immediately pack them and keep them in freezer in air tight boxes / ziploc bags ( 2 to 3 pieces in each box).

When ever you want to fry fish for kids, take a box out of the freezer and leave them in refrigerator for 30 minutes. Easily accessible good protein food for growing children.

Enjoy your spicy masala fish fry!
