Bitter gourd, one of the vegetables which actually scare everyone. Moms have to verbally wrestle with the family to make them eat this vegetable. Here is a recipe for all of you super moms which will help you make your family relish bitter gourd too. This recipe is actually a fish recipe. Its called fish peera or fish toran. Toran means, we add grated coconut to the dish and its a dry dish. I have used the fish recipe to make bitter gourd as i have nonveg lovers at home. So lets get started.
bitter gourds – 2
shallots – 5 to 8
onions – 2
green chillies – 4
ginger – 1 piece
cocum – 1
coconut oil – 1 tsp
Wash the bitter gourd and remove the seeds. Chop the bitter gourd to very small pieces. As small as u can the better.
Chop the onions, shallots, green chillies and ginger to very small pieces. Add this to the bitter gourd.
Add grated coconut also to the bitter gourd. Add salt, chilli powder, turmeric powder, curry leaves and oil to this and mix well with hands. Give a small pressure to the mixture as you mix it. This helps the flavours to come out and mix well.
All this should be done before you keep it on stove. Now we start the cooking. Add a piece of cocum to this and cook it on low flame till its cooked. If you need water just sprinkle water. Do not add more water while cooking as this is a dry dish.
Once the bitter gourd is cooked, open the lid and stir till the dish is totally dry.
Enjoy hot pavakya toran with rice or chapati. The nonveg lovers are also happy with the dish.
