Believe it or not, these handmade plastic wire flower vases were once very popular in India. 😀 . They were found in many living room showcases. Now we get fancier ones in shops. So I am not sure how many will make them now. But I am adding this tutorial to show one new technique in weaving – Increasing and decreasing diameter without using beads. The knot used in this tutorial is called wheat knot (kothumai mudichu / கோதுமை முடிச்சு in tamil)
Here is another DIY wire flower vase where we used beads to expand diameter.
Bangle – 1
Black wire – 5 feet long. Number of pieces will depend on diameter of bangle. I used 30 pieces of black wires.
Green will be the running wire.
Fold the black wire into half and make a knot in the bangle like shown below.
Continue adding more pieces side by side.
Now we have to wrap the running wire around the black wires. The picture below shows a closeup of the knot.
To make the knot, make a loop of the running wire.
Pull the black wire through this loop.
Remember that two pieces of black wire will be pulled inside the loop.
We have wrapped the running wire around the black wire once and this is how it will appear at this stage. Now repeat the same once more around the same black wire.
We will be wrapping twice around the same black wires before proceeding to the next.
Once the first line is completed, continue to start the next line.
5 lines completed. You can choose to add any number of lines.
Each green knot is made by wrapping the green wire around 2 black wires. Now to increase the diameter of the vase, we will split the wires.
Split the two black wires and start the next line.
Each green knot will now have 2 green knots in the next line.
The diameter will double because of this.
I usually knot the first wire so I know when a full circle is completed. This helps me count the number of rows I am adding.
After 7 rows, we will begin to join the two black wires again.
You might have to pull them together to avoid gaps like this.
Appearance after 4 rows.
Now split the black wires again and add 3 more lines. This will form the broad top portion of the vase. We will not be using the green running wire any more. Leave 3 inches and cut it off and tuck in the end.
I started this vase by folding into half 30 wire pieces. So I will be having 60 black wires at the top. These will now be woven to form the rim of the vase.
Group them based on the number of triangles you want to add. Since I wanted 5 triangles, each group will have 12.
The knot used is the box knot / square knot. (Tutorial here)
First triangle is over.
Tuck in the wire like shown below.
Weave the handles. Handle tutorial is here.
The black wires will now comes through the center. Tie them together with a rubber band if necessary. Cut the wires to required length and add plastic flowers at the end. I forgot to buy plastic flowers when I bought the wires. So I am unable to show a picture of them now.
