This tutorial shows how you can crochet the puff stitch flower. These flowers can be used to embellish hair bands, hair clips and other crochet projects like handbags, blankets etc.
Start with 4 – 6 chains depending on your preferred size of the hole in the middle.
Form a ring by making a slip stitch into the first chain.
Then chain 1 to increase height and start next row.
Add 12 single crochet stitches into the ring.
Link to the first stitch with a slip stitch.
You can continue with same color or change color for petals. Chain 3.
To crochet these petals, you have to know how to crochet a puff stitch. (Click link for detailed tutorial with step by step pictures).
Crochet a puff stitch.
Make a slip stitch in the next chain.
Chain 3 and repeat the next petal.
In the picture below, for the first petal, I crocheted all the 5 stitches of the puff in the same chain. In the second petal, I have crocheted 3 of them in one chain and 2 in the next chain. The first petal will look narrow at the base and the second one will look wider. Choose the look that you like.
Adding more petals.
When you are at the last petal, you can simply end it like all other petals (slip stitch at the central ring) or you can end it by linking it to the first petal with a slip stitch as shown below (red spot marks this point).
Noticed the slight difference in the central ring of the two flowers shown below?
The outer edge of the central ring has chains (see below). Each chain has two loops that form the shape of the English letter ‘V’.
If the hook is passed under both the loops of the chain, the flower will look like the pink flower. If the hook passes only under one of the loops of the chain, then the flower will look like the yellow flower.
These flowers can also be joined in many different ways to make a large blanket. One method is to form hexagons. We will be joining the flowers as we make. This is easier and less messy than making all the flowers at first and joining them later.
