This snake gourd moong dal gravy (புடலங்காய் பருப்பு குழம்பு) is an easy to digest food that can be given to babies when solids are introduced first.
This can either be a side dish and mixed with rice or consumed alone as a hearty soup.
Snake gourd – Choose slender ones that are neither too hard nor soggy. Wash, peel the skin and slit it into two. Scoop out the seeds and the mesh like things in the middle and discard. Then chop into small pieces.
Green chilli – slit length wise (Avoid for babies)
One onion – diced
cilantro / coriander leaves
Tomato – optional
Ghee / oil – Ghee is preferable if this food is for children.
Moong beans – Among the beans, moong beans digests more easily so it is preferable when dal is first introduced to babies.
Heat ghee and season with mustard seeds followed by cumin seeds and then a spoon of urad dal.
Then add curry leaves, coriander leaves, garlic and onions.
Then add the vegetable and stir fry.
Add salt to taste and a pinch of turmeric. Then wash and add moon dal and water ( minimum 3 times the amount of dal) and cook in pressure cooker for 3 whistles.
Stir and garnish with cilantro (coriander leaves). This is one of the best comfort foods in the south Indian menu.
The same can be stir fried without moong dal.
