In this watermelon coaster tutorial, we will learn how to crochet a perfectly flat circle.

Most of us can remember our early crocheting days …. how we started to crochet a circle but ended up with a bowl shaped fabric or a fabric that has waves / frills on the edges.

In this tutorial, I will show a simple, easy to remember trick for crocheting a perfect circle. After this, we won’t be needing a chart or written pattern ever in our life. But while learning a new trick, let us make a pretty coaster for our little one.

Skills required: You have to know how to crochet a

chain, slip stitch and

double crochet stitch for the project. (Click on links for detailed tutorials)

So here is the crochet chart for making a perfectly flat circle. You can pin it future reference. (connect with me @Pinterest / facebook page).

Let me explain this chart a little bit first. Below this, you can find detailed written tutorial with photos where these steps are demonstrated.

A little bit of math first 🙂

We will start the circle from the middle. The ring in the center (row 1) is made of chains. If we add 18 stitches in row 2, next row will have (18 + 18) 36 stitches and the row after that will have (36 +18) 54 stitches. Each row will increase by the number of stitches that were added in row 2.

Row 1:  Magic ring / Ring with chains

Row 2: Double crochet stitches. (In this example: Total of 18 stitches)

Row 3: 2 Double crochet stitches on each double crochet stitch. (Total of 18 +18 stitches = 36)

Row 4: Repeat (2 double crochet stitches +1 double crochet) (Total of 36 +18 stitches = 54)

Row 5: Repeat (2 double crochet stitches +1 double crochet + 1 double crochet) ((Total of 54 +18 stitches = 72)

Row 6: Repeat (2 double crochet stitches +1 double crochet + 1 double crochet + 1 double crochet) (Total of 72 +18 stitches = 90 )

The beauty of this pattern is that you can use either double crochet or single crochet or any crochet stitch without any changes to the pattern.

If you prefer a written tutorial with step by step pictures, here you go.

Row 1: Start with 4 – 6 chains. The number depends on the thickness of your yarn as well as the preferred size of the hole in the center.
