This is a simple tutorial showing how you can weave the herringbone pattern / Zigzag pattern / Chevron pattern. I am going to use thin strips of coconut tree fronds. Weaving is a wonderful craft activity for kids.
Am not sure how many of you remember that this pattern was commonly used in woven sofas in India 2 – 3 decades ago. Remember those sofas / charpoys that had wooden frames?. Plastic wires were used to weave the charpoys. This was one of the common weaving patterns used. This pattern is closely knit.
Not just charpoys and sofas, I have seen woven coasters and place mats having this pattern.
Start with vertical strips (warp).
Next we will add the horizontal strips (weft). The weft goes under 2, over 2, under 2 and then again over 2.
The next weft strip will follow the same pattern (above 2, below 2) but will shift one position to the right side.
Continue the pattern but shift one position to the right.
Herringbone pattern is forming.
More warp strips can always be added to make the project wider.
Similarly more weft strips can be added too.
Tuck in the excess and we have a DIY woven coaster ready in 5 minutes. Strips of cloth / straws / fish tape / paper /scoubidou (lanyard wires) can also be used for weaving.
