Here is the tutorial for making this woven clutch. Plastic wires were used to make this. The knot used is the basic weaving knot called box knot / square knot. But it looks different and has a checkered pattern because we change the direction of alternate knots.
Regular box knot will look like the blue and yellow picture shown below. Notice the square (/diamond) shaped holes formed between the knots.
The box knot variation will look like this yellow and black picture. The holes between the knots are narrow and elongated diamonds.
Cut 1 meter long wire pieces. The number depends on the desired length of the clutch. I cut 20 pieces.
Now we will be joining the cut pieces to the running wire. Leave 50 cms long running wire on the left and make a knot with the cut piece. Tutorial for box knot is here.
Continue adding more and more cut pieces.
Once all the cut pieces have been added, allow 50 cms of the running wire and cut it. Repeat more lines if you are making a basket. Since this is a clutch / purse, one line is enough for the base.
The base is over and we will start the sides now. Allow 3 inches of the running wire and start making the same box knots.
When a corner is turned, you will see a triangle being formed with 3 knots. This clutch will have 4 such corners.
Turning next corner.
Complete one full circle around the base. The first row is over.
Now I am going to show how to make this box knot variation.
The first knot will be a regular box knot.
In a regular box / square knot, we will fold the blue running wire to form a loop and wrap the white wire like shown below.
Then we will fold the blue wire up.
Next we will weave the end of the white wire through the blue loop and tighten.
The knot will look like this.
However in this variation, the first knot will be regular knot. For the second knot, we will fold the white wire and wrap the blue wire around it.
Then, we will fold the white up and weave the end of the blue running wire into the white loop.
The picture below shows the two variations side by side for comparison.
The third knot will be a regular box knot.
The fourth knot will be the variation / mirror image of the knot
Continue weaving and complete one full round.
From the second row, we will begin to see the checkered pattern emerge.
Second row complete.
The purse is growing.
When the desired height have been reached, weave in the excess on the back side of the knots.
Clutch is ready. Add a liner and zipper.
Rhiddhi Shyamala followed this tutorial and made this basket. Very nice of her to share this picture with me. How is it folks?
